Trocaire Fast
Padraig Fitzgerald from Kinsale has been a loyal supporter of Trocaire's work for over ten years. This year he took part in Trocaire's 24 Hour Fast and raised 2,605e for their work with some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people in the third world.
"My wife and myself visited Kenya for our honeymoon in 1997. When we saw the poverty which existed there we decided to do something constructive on our return. I began by supporting Trocaire's 24 Hour Fast. I have done the Fast each year since then and have raised over 20,000e for their work with poor communities overseas".
The money raised through this year's Lenten Campaign will assist Trocaire in funding its long-term agricultural, education, healthcare, human rights and peace-keeping projects in 40 countries in the developing world. The theme of this year's campaign was round the issue of climate change and global warming and how these are impacting on poor communities who are least able to quote. Extremes of weather, drought and flooding are making poor peoples lives in poor parts of our world such as Kenya and El Salvador extremely difficult. Most families that Trocaire work with rely on small-scale agriculture to survive. In recent times, families have lost all their crops either because they drown or die in the searing heat from drought. This means that they have nothing to eat and nothing to sell on at local markets to earn an income to survive. Many families rely on food-aid from Trocaire.
I would like to thank Padraig for his enduring support of our work each and every year. His energy for and commitment to Trocaire is overwhelming. We could not carry out our work were it not for the generosity and solidarity of people here at home like Padraig.

Dear Padraig,
Wonderful news! In fact I have just visited Malawi for the very first time and was deeply impressed by both the country and its people. I am so pleased that you will be having this wonderful experience! And fully deserved too; both you and your Kinsale Peace Project colleagues are a true inspiration!! May you continue to grow from strength to strength!
In a moment I am going to send you a very short poem by Shel Silverstein. It is very simple but very moving. It is surely what we should be telling future generations and what our lives should be all about!
With fondest wishes,
